I love exploring the New England coast, especially when my exploration leads me to places like the Beauport Hotel in Gloucester, MA. This was my first time visiting the North Shore and I’m so happy that the Beauport was my first experience. This quintessential New England hotel is situated on the Gloucester Harbor (steps from the water) and IS the perfect spot for a mini-getaway.
Immediately upon arriving I knew James and I were going to love this hotel. The lobby was stunning – it was bright, welcoming and designed with a nautical theme in mind. The classic coastal décor carried through to our ocean view suite – a guest room equipped with fireplace, private balcony and views of Gloucester Harbor. I loved waking up early to enjoy my coffee on the balcony while the beach was quiet and the water still. We were lucky enough to have perfect weather during our stay, but I couldn’t help but think how fun it would be to watch a storm roll in while cozied up by the fireplace (we may need to plan a trip back this fall!)
Gloucester may be best known as a fishing town, but it’s also the oldest working art colony in the country. All guest rooms at the Beauport Hotel incorporate the work of its local artists. You can admire their photographs, paintings and custom furnishings spread throughout the hotel lobby and 94 guest rooms.
In my opinion, no stay at the Beauport Hotel is be complete without a day spent at the rooftop pool, also known as The Birdseye Tower. The infinity pool, hot tub and panoramic views are exclusively for hotel guests. Sip on a refreshing cocktail from the bar while lounging on the wooden deck and admiring the city skyline and harbor views. We situated ourselves in what I would consider the best seats in the house…two beach loungers on the south side of the deck facing the Harbor. We didn’t move all day – except to grab a drink (or 2 or 3.) We also took advantage of poolside dining service for lunch ordering a lobster roll and lobster crab cake – YUM!
If you’re deciding between the on site beach or pool – I’d go for the pool. Where else in New England are you going to find a rooftop oasis like this??
If you’re staying at the Beauport Hotel, there’s really no reason to leave. With a rooftop pool, beach and delicious food only an elevator ride away, you can easily spend your entire stay on hotel grounds. IF you decide to get adventurous and tour the town, I recommend hopping on one of the hotel’s complimentary beach cruisers to take you on your way. James and I rode our bright blue bikes along the HarborWalk lined with American Flags and memorials paying tribute to those men lost at sea. If you’ve seen the Perfect Storm, you’re familiar with a story that’s been the reality for far too many fisherman. If you have time before you leave, it’s worth popping your head into the Crow’s Nest for a beer (a bar made famous from the movie.)
If bikes aren’t you’re thing, consider taking advantage of the Beauport Beach Bus or hotel shuttle. Both are available on a first come first served basis and will take you anywhere within a three-mile radius.
When a hotel restaurant attracts locals – you know it’s good. The Beauport Hotel’s onsite restaurant 1606 offers modern American cuisine and a relaxed dining experience. I’d recommend sitting outside if the weather allows. An oceanfront deck, fire pit, rocking chairs and blue and white striped umbrellas really set the scene for a traditional New England dining experience. James and I had an awesome dinner seated at the edge of the deck overlooking the boats cruising in and out of the harbor. Our 7pm reservation also allowed us to enjoy a beautiful sunset – the perfect ending to our stay!
If you’re visiting for more than one evening, give the Seaport Grille a try too! It’s a quick shuttle ride away and the lobster bisque and key lime pie were the best we’ve ever had.
