Every fall James and I take a ride out to Litchfield County for our traditional ‘Fall Day.’ A day to do all the New England fall things – pick apples, buy pumpkins, leaf peep, etc. This year was extra special, since we able to introduce Emilia to all our favorite spots! There’s no doubt that Litchfield County is the best place to visit in Connecticut this time of year. Keep scrolling for our Litchfield County Fall Travel Guide!
After exploring the area over the past few years, we found some great spots that I’m excited to share with you. See below for our favorite spots to visit in Litchfield County during the fall!
APPLE PICKING
Averill Farm – 250 Calhoun St., Washington, CT 06794. We love this farm for many reasons, it’s location being one of them. Averill Farm is located slightly off the beaten path, on a gorgeous hilltop in the Litchfield Hills. The views are spectacular. The farm is never overly crowded which makes it all the much more pleasant to visit.
WINE
Hopkins Vineyard – 25 Hopkins Rd, New Preston, CT 06777. A fun little vineyard set in the scenic hills of Litchfield County overlooking Lake Waramau. They grow their own grapes and offer tastings. I recommend packing lunch a grabbing a bottle of bubbly to enjoy on the grounds!
FOOD
Arethusa Farm A Mano – 833 Bantam Rd, Bantam, CT 06750. Awesome stop for morning coffee and pastries or an afternoon lunch.
At The Corner – A great stop for lunch! Artisanal food and craft beer, located in the heart of downtown Litchfield. I highly recommend the French onion soup!
Bantam Bread – 853 Bantam Road, Bantam, CT 06750. If you’re a bread lover, you’ll want to grab a loaf to-go from Bantam Bread. Their sourdough is to die for!
Arethusa Farm Dairy – 822 Bantam Road, Bantam, CT 06750. You can’t visit Litchfield without indulging in an “old fashioned” ice cream cone from Arethusa Farm Dairy. Using their own fresh milk and cream, Arethusa makes a variety of homemade flavors likely to be the best ice cream you’ve ever tasted.
Thorncrest Farm & Milk House Chocolates – 280 Town Hill Road, Goshen, Connecticut 06756. If you love chocolate, you MUST stop by Thorncrest Farm (just 5 minutes from the center of Litchfield.) Thorncrest Farm is known as the home of “Single Cow Origin Chocolates”, meaning all chocolates are made using the farm’s fresh milk, cream and butter supplied by their very own cows. It’s just about as local and as homemade as you can get. If you’re interested in visiting the cows of Thorncrest Farm, check their farm & stable hours.
Litchfield Candy Shop – 245 West Street, Litchfield, CT 06759. If you’ve got kids, they’ll love this stop! It’s a tiny little shop full of every candy you can think of, including all the nostalgic candy we grew up with as kids. Fill a paper bag with your favorites to take with you for the day!
LEAF PEEPING
My best advice here is to JUST DRIVE! We love taking the backroads of Goshen, Litchfield, Washington, Warren, Cornwall and Kent. I would also recommend doing a loop around Lake Waramaug (where Hopkins Vineyard is located,) which occupies parts of the towns of Kent, Warren and Washington. In addition to the beautiful fall foliage, there’s some swoon-worthy lake houses to admire!
You can also drive up to Cornwall to see the West Cornwall Covered Bridge. Here’s the route we take…
