Every Christmas I hang wreaths on the exterior windows of our house. A few years ago I invested in real-touch wreaths that have held up so well over the years (through rain, wind, snow.) They look so real, especially from the road. Today I’m sharing a simple way to hang your outdoor wreaths with only need 2 supplies – a wreath and ribbon! Keep scrolling for a tutorial…
STEP 1: FIND THE PERFECT WREATH AND RIBBON
REAL TOUCH WREATHS
These are excellent indoor/outdoor wreaths and perfect for you windows! They are made of real-touch greenery and look so realistic. Mine have been through rain and snow and still look good as new!
WIRED RIBBON
I recommend using wired ribbon because it’s easier to fold (step 3) and seems to hold up better over time. I chose a neutral burlap 3″ ribbon.
STEP 2: MEASURE + CUT RIBBON
First determine where on the window you want your wreath to hang. I hang my wreaths on the top half of my window. Once you find the perfect spot, measure how much ribbon you’ll need.
I recommend looping your through the wreath (as seen below) and holding up to your window. You’ll need enough ribbon to go up through the the top of the window + an additional 6”-8” that will hang on the interior side.
STEP 3: FOLD RIBBON
Once your ribbon is cut to the appropriate length, hold both ends at the top and start making 1” folds. By adding 6”-8″ of length to your ribbon (as mentioned in previous step) you should be able to create about three 1″ folds. These folds in the ribbon are what will help keep it in place and prevent it from slipping through the window.
As I mentioned earlier, wired ribbon is the best to work with!
STEP 4: HANG WREATH
I hang the wreaths from the inside of my home, using a step ladder. Begin by opening your window from the TOP down. Place the wreath through the window to the exterior side of the house, holding the wreath by the ribbon from inside.
Slide the wreath down the window by holding tight onto the ribbon. Stop right where the folds begin. Close your window so that the folded end of the ribbon is on the interior side of the window. You can adjust the height here, loosening a fold or adding one if needed.
Once you’ve found the perfect placement, close your windows tight and lock them. Having these folds will help keep the ribbon secure, ensuring it won’t slip through and fall down.
OPTIONAL : FELT BACKING
If you’re concerned about the back of the wreaths scratching your windows (or making too much noise) line the back in felt. I purchase brown felt from the craft store hot glued it to the back.
