The laundry room was one of the most challenging spaces to design in our entire house. While working with our architect, we asked to have our laundry room on the 2nd floor close to our bedrooms. We ended up squeezing it into a space that’s a little awkward in shape, with has no windows or natural light – but it works! After living with this room for a few years and making several tweaks along the way, I think we made the best use of this space considering all the challenges. Design and aesthetics aside, my main priority was to have a FUNCTIONAL laundry room and thankfully, we were able to achieve that. I’m excited to share how we transformed this small, oddly shaped space into a fully functional laundry room that I love!

COUNTERTOPS
The biggest upgrade we made in our laundry room was installing new countertops. We replaced our original white oak wood countertops (which turned out to be an awful option for a laundry room) with one of our favorite countertop materials – Carrara marble. Our countertops were purchased and installed by Ambiance Stone, located in Berlin, CT.
Ambiance Stone is a family-owned business with over 20 years of experience templating, cutting, polishing, edging, and installing stone countertops. The owner of Ambiance Stone has worked in all aspects of stone fabrication and is hands on for every project. We had the best experience working with Ambiance Stone from our initial conversations in the showroom to the final installation at our home.
We began the process with a visit to the Ambiance Stone showroom to pick out our countertop material. They have a wide variety of natural and manmade countertop materials – offering granite, marble, quartz, quartzite, porcelain and soapstone. I love being able to visit a showroom to pick out the exact slab that will be used in our home. The staff at Ambiance stone was so friendly and helpful, taking us through all of our options before making our final decision on marble. The next step was setting up the initial visit to our home to template for our countertops. Once the template was made, we set up our second appointment for installation. The team that came to install our countertops was professional, punctual and precise in their work.
Everyone at Ambiance Stone was friendly, knowledgable and helpful throughout the entire process. They were incredibly easy to work with from start to finish and we are so pleased with the final product. Also important to note, their prices are extremely competitive – a great quality product at an even better price point!
We have an L-shaped countertop in this room with a sink area in the corner. We went with a 2″ backsplash around the L-shape which I love. I wanted to do something other than a standard 4″ backsplash in this space and the 2″ was the perfect choice. Around the sink, we took the backsplash all the way up to the bottom of the first wall shelf. Keep scrolling for photos of our finished countertops – they came out PERFECT!
KNOBS
One of the easiest and most affordable ways to upgrade a room is to swap out knobs. I found these amazing brushed nickel knobs on Amazon for an incredible price. They’re sold as a set of 10 and are available in a bunch of finish options.

HANGING SYSTEMS
We hang at least half of our clothes when I’m doing laundry, so it was important for me to have an easy and efficient way to hang dry things. I found two wall hanging systems that work great and don’t take up a lot of space (both linked below.) We also had a single hanging rod installed the length of the room to hang clothing on hangers. The combination of all 3 hanging systems works perfectly for our needs!

FLOORING
If you’re looking for a fun and affordable tile, this vintage style floral tile is beautiful in person! I wanted to bring a little color and pattern into this room and floor tiles seemed to be the best way to do that. The floral pattern is a greyish/blue color with a faded, vintage-looking finish. I also love the size of these tiles, making them easy to install.

ORGANIZATION + STORAGE + DECOR
I’ve mentioned several times in this post how important it was for me to have a functional laundry room. I kept that in mind when it came to purchasing decor as well. The majority of the ‘decor’ purchased for my shelves and countertops was for organizing and storing my laundry supplies and products (glass jars, woven baskets, etc.) I also found a really great framed laundry guide (linked below) to help decipher laundry symbols.
