TIP 1: Pick a Color Palette
First and foremost you want to pick a color palette for your fall decor. When we think of fall the first colors that probably come to mind are orange, yellow and red. I love the traditional fall colors…but don’t feel limited to those! If you’re a neutral lover, try decorating with whites, browns and greens. That’s what I decided to do this year! With all the beautiful specialty pumpkins being sold these days, there are more color options than ever!
The trees used on either side of my door are real, but I recently replaced them with a faux alternative that looks identical! I’m so happy with them. They come in both 4ft and 5ft heights. Use code REDWHITE for 25% OFF!

TIP 2: Mix Real & Faux Pumpkins
One of my favorite fall decorating tips is to mix real and fake pumpkins! I love the look of all real pumpkins but they can be pricey to purchase year after year (especially if you go overboard with your fall decor, like I do!) I’d much rather invest in a real looking FAKE pumpkin that I can use year after year. My best advice here is too go faux with larger sized pumpkins (as those are usually the most expensive to purchase) and go real with medium and smaller sized pumpkins.
When you’re arranging your pumpkins, be be sure to mix them well. I recommend starting with your faux pumpkins as a base, then adding the real to stack, layer and fill in the gaps. This should give you a good arrangement making it difficult to determine which are real and which are fake!

TIP 3: Spray Paint Pumpkins
The demand for white and specialty pumpkins has really increased over the past couple years. As always, with an increase in demand, also comes an increase in price. Orange pumpkins are typically priced less per pound. So a great way to get around spending a fortune on white pumpkins is to purchase them orange and spray paint them! I’ve tested several white spray paints and my favorite for this DIY project is THIS SHADE of white. It’s by far the most real looking. I cover the stems with painters tape.
You can spray fake pumpkins too! I always keep an eye out for good fake pumpkins. Look for ones that have a realistic shape and stem – don’t worry about the color since you’ll be spraying them. End of season sales are the best times to purchase these!

TIP 4: Layer Door Mats
An easy way to make an entryway more inviting and cozy is to layer your doormats. We use a NATURAL FIBER DOORMAT year-round but I like to layer one underneath when I’m styling my entryway for fall. I found this gorgeous STRIPED INDOOR/OUTDOOR RUG that looks perfect laid under your everyday doormat. Both are linked below!

TIP 5: Put Mums in Baskets
Try placing your mums in baskets instead of pots! I have a mixture of both on our front porch. The baskets add some warmth and texture to your front door decor. I use these same style baskets to hold mini trees around the holidays (see my 15 Easy & Affordable Holiday Decorating Tips post!)
TIP 6: Repurpose Holiday Wreaths
I had trouble finding fall wreaths I liked for my front doors so I decided to repurpose my Christmas wreaths instead! I simply hung them from a wide, NEUTRAL BURLAP RIBBON. I use red ribbon for the holidays – seen HERE. I love how these wreaths can work for both seasons, just by changing up the ribbon!
TIP 7: Stack & Layer Pumpkins
Create height with your pumpkins by stacking them and depth by adding layers. You can also display your pumpkins is propped up on their sides to give them height. This will help to add some dimension and interest to your arrangements!
TIP 8: Mix in Veggies with your Pumpkins
When it comes to fall decor we first think PUMPKINS! But don’t forget about the other autumn veggies. Squash and cabbage are great alternatives to use in place of pumpkins. Almost always these other veggies will be more affordable than pumpkins, so mix these in where you can. Squash comes in all different colors, shapes and sizes this time of year. I used green acorn squash as part of my island centerpiece and included another dark green variety in my front entryway decor.
Here are some of the other items I used to create my island centerpiece…
TIP 9: Use Gourds on Place Settings
If you’re hosting Thanksgiving or any fall-themed dinners, use mini pumpkins or other gourds to spruce up your place settings. This is such an easy and affordable way to add a little festive touch to your dinner table. I used real pumpkins!

TIP 10: Decorate with Lanterns
Lanterns are one of my favorite accessories to decorate with. I use them for year-round outdoor decor. I love tall and narrow lanterns so they fit nicely styled with other decor and don’t look too bulky when grouped together. My lanterns come in 3 different sizes, linked below.
I also linked some great battery-operated pillar candles you can place inside. Out of all faux candles I’ve tried, these are the most real looking!
TIP 11: Fill Bowls with Mini Pumpkins
If you have pretty bowls on display in your home, fill them with mini pumpkins! This is a quick and easy way to decorate for the season. Mini pumpkins are inexpensive and you only need a few to fill a bowl. I used them in my wood pedestal bowl (that’s part of my island centerpiece) and another white bowl in out kitchen.

TIP 12: Bring Nature Indoors
This is one of favorite home decor tips in general – bringing natural elements indoors! If you have a tree with pretty fall leaves in your yard, cut a few branches during their peak color to use inside! You can arrange the branches in a vase or use the leaves to accent your fall decor.
This year I’m using freshly cut sprigs of boxwood from our front yard to decorate my place settings. This is such a pretty way to decorate and its FREE!
TP PRESERVE: Immediately after cutting your branches, soak the stems in 1 part glycerin and 2 parts water to help preserve their life and color!
TIP 13: Diffuse a Cozy Scent
This year I’m swapping out my fall candles for a cozy essential oil to diffuse throughout the house. The scent is described as embodying the “mystical essence of an open fire in the deep wood” with keynotes of cardamom, papyrus and musk. The perfect scent for fall and winter! I love this ESSENTIAL OIL DIFFUSER.
