As a new parent, knowing what toys to buy your newborn baby can be challenging and overwhelming. James and I had no idea what to buy for our little one, so we purchased some random things we thought she might like based on research and reviews. Some were a hit, others were not! We learned a lot about Emilia and what she loved to play with during her first 6 months. I took note and put together a list of all her favorite toys – basically all the items that kept her entertained the longest! So whether you’re a new parent creating your baby registry or a friend/family member looking to purchase a gift for a new baby this Christmas, I hope our list of the BEST BABY TOYS FOR 0 – 6 MONTHS helps!
BEST BABY TOYS FOR 0-6 MONTHS
1. ANIMATED TOY
This is one of Emilia’s favorite toys! She always has the biggest smile on her face when she plays with it (I’m pretty sure she thinks its her little friend!) This plush elephant provides interactive play by singing songs and playing peekaboo. It’s ears flap too!
2. PACIFIER TOY
This part pacifier, part plush toy is great for babies that may have trouble taking a pacifier. The design makes it easy to keep the pacifier close to take it in and out of their mouth. Even if your baby doesn’t take a pacifier, this is a fun toy for them to chew on. I love that the stuffed animal attachment helps to prevent it from being dropped or misplaced.
3. SILICONE TEETHER
If you’re baby likes to chew on their fingers, this toy is a great replacement! This teether is baby finger-sized and perfectly designed for little hands to grab and hold.
4. CRINKLE TOY
This was the very first toy Emilia showed interested in! She started playing with it during her first month. She was intrigued by the crinkle sound and loved sucking on the little tags surrounding it. It was the only thing that would keep her entertained the first month!
5. DISCOVERY CENTER
Emilia received this discovery center as gift around 5.5 months. She has shown a lot of interest in it the past couple weeks. It’s an activity table with seat attachment that encourages your baby to walk. The seat scoots 360 degrees around the activity center as they play. I love that this activity center provides a mix of physical and sensory experiences that promote both movement and cognitive skills. You can pick your language – English, Spanish or French.
6. MUSICAL TOYS
Emilia loves her music toys – the sounds and songs keep her interested and engaged. I also love that they’re small and portable so we can take them in the car and on walks!
7. ACTIVITY FLOOR SEAT
This is the first activity seat Emilia used as soon as she could hold her head up. It encouraged her to sit up and interact with toys. It was also great for giving mom a break every now and then!
8. TOUCH & FEEL BOOK
At this age, getting your baby to find interest in a book can be difficult. I found that interactive pop-up books or touch & feel books worked best. Books full of texture give your baby something to look forward to touching and feeling during story time, capturing the attention of even the youngest children.
9. TEETHING BLANKET
This comfort blanket is a great toy for babies as they begin to teeth. Emilia used it from the time she was 2 months old, she loved all the tags! She continues to use it at 6 months old as she’s teething. It features an elastic that can be worn around the baby’s wrist to keep it from falling or getting lost.
10. SOFT BOOK
At this age, soft baby books are a great way to introduce your babies to reading. This fun book also features textures, crinkle sounds and squeaker. It’s got everything you need to keep your baby entertained!
11. DEVELOPMENTAL RATTLE
This is a great toy for sensory development! It lights up and changes colors when your baby shakes it. This is the toy Emilia always grabs for over everything else!
12. SHEEP SOOTHER
This is the only toy we have in Emilia’s crib and she loves it. It has a hook and loop fastener that allows you to attach it to side of the crib. It plays sounds and lullabies. We have it play Twinkle Twinkle every night to soothe her to sleep!
13. TEETHING TOY
There are a lot of teething toys on the market, but Sophie the Giraffe always seems to be a favorite among babies! It quickly became Emilias preferred squeaky toy at an early age and now is one of her favorite teethers (she loves to teeth on the ears and legs!) Sophie comes with us everywhere!!
14. SOFT BLOCKS
This set includes 10 soft colorful blocks that focus on gross motor skill and sensory development. I love that they are soft for her to play with now, and also include animals and numbers for learning as she grows!
15. JUMPER
This is a great jumper toy for babies that are just learning how to use their legs! It gives them just enough freedom to bounce on their own. Out of all the toys we own, this activity jumper kept Emilia occupied for the longest amount of time from ages 4-6 months. It has music, clip-on moveable toys and a bounce counter that encourages them and tracks every jump!
16. LOVEVERY PLAYKITS
I can’t say enough great things about Lovevery. We’ve been subscribed to their kits since Emilia was first born. They make a 0-12 week kit that’s full of great age appropriate Montessori style toys. It’s a great introduction to the brand. I highly recommend subscribing and receiving the monthly play kits through the toddler years! Emilia has learned SO much from them.
17. MUSICAL CATERPILLAR
This caterpillar is one of Emilia’s most used toys – she’s fascinated with all the colors, patterns and textures. The slim, long shape is also the perfect shape for her to grab and hold onto.
18. MUSHROOM TEETHER
Emilia took time to get used to a pacifier and this mushroom teether was a great segue for her. I love the design of this toy, which makes it super easy for an infant to hold onto. The two knobs at the top are perfect for teething and sucking.
