After posting about my PINCH PLEAT DRAPES from Amazon, I had many inquiries about the ROMAN SHADES we paired with them in our guest room. These too, were an awesome affordable find! James and I hired a company to come in and custom make almost all the blinds in our home – with the exception of a few bedrooms. For these remaining rooms I decided to try purchasing them on our own through BLINDS.COM.
The main difference between hiring a company to come out to your home versus ordering blinds online is the price! It’s much more affordable. You also have to be willing to take your own measurements and install them (or find someone to install them) on your own.
For more info on how top order the drapes in this room, see my post AMAZON FIND: CUSTOM PINCH PLEAT DRAPES.
MEASUREMENTS
Lets tackle the first task – measurements! This is actually easier than you think. Just make sure your measurements are precise! Here are a few tips that I found helpful.
- Be sure to use a steel measuring tape for all your measurements!
- Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch. Never round up or down to the nearest half or whole inch. If the size is on a 1/16″ mark, then round down to the next 1/8″.
- On your tape measure, you’ll find a measurement imprinted on the housing. This is the exact length of the housing. The purpose of this measurement is for measuring corners. Most people measure corners by bending the tape and guessing at what measurement is in the middle of the curve – DON’T DO THIS! Instead, you’ll get a much more accurate measurement by placing the housing tightly in the corner of the window sill and extending your tape to the other edge. See what measurement is on the tape and add the additional measurement that’s listed on the housing. This is particularly helpful when measuring for inside mount blinds! See my INSTAGRAM highlight “DRAPES/BLINSD” for a demonstration!
- Don’t assume two windows are the same measurements – even if they appear to be. Measure each individual window separately.
CUSTOMIZATION
A few things you need to think about when ordering custom window treatments: mounting style, measurements, color, lift type/position, valance style, controls, headrail style, folds and liner. Note that the price could be affected based on what options you choose.
All these choices can be very overwhelming to make online, so I’m sharing the EXACT orders we placed. Keep scrolling for all the options we chose for both our ROMAN SHADES and FAUX WOOD BLINDS. We love the way they came out! I hope this guide helps you with your purchase.
