In my opinion lashes are everything, which makes it pretty important to find a great mascara. With so many different products on the market – all claiming to do miraculous things to your lashes – how do you choose? You should start by asking yourself, what are am I looking for in a mascara? Volume? Length? Curl? I’ve tested countless brands and would like to share one of my favorites with you.
For everyday lashes, I’m looking for length and curl. For the past few years, I’ve been using Clinique’s High Impact Curling Mascara (not to be confused with the original High Impact Mascara which comes in a black tube.) High Impact Curling Mascara is known to both lengthen and curl your lashes. This mascara is perfect for everyday use – meaning it’s enough to make your eyes pop, without adding too much volume or drama. It creates a natural and effortless daytime look.
Clinique’s High Impact Curling Mascara is a unique formula that is naturally water-proof. This mascara can withstand tears, sweaty workouts and days at the beach. Even better, it’s easy to remove. Unlike most waterproof mascaras that require scrubbing and harsh makeup removers, this mascara simply washes off with water. You may be asking, how can a mascara be both waterproof and removed with water? The key is the temperature of the water. In cold water it’s waterproof. However, by running warm water over your eyes and gently massage your lashes, the mascara will slide off in little tubes. This gentle removal technique leaves no messy black rings under your eyes and eliminates the need for makeup remover all together!
As much as I adore this mascara, the application can be hard to get use to. Considering the formula is different than most other mascaras, there is a special technique to applying it. Here’s a little tutorial on how I curl my lashes and apply Clinique High Impact Curling mascara.
To begin, I always curl my lashes BEFORE applying my mascara (try to avoid curling after you’ve applied to reduce pulling and breakage.) When curling, I catch all my lashes and use my finger to press them firmly against the curler for a few seconds before releasing (see photo below.) TIP – occasionally I’ll use my blow dryer to lightly heat my eyelash curler prior to curling, to help reinforce the hold.)
After my lashes are curled, I use my High Impact Curling Mascara to lightly coat my lashes. Be sure to take full advantage of the arched brush by using it to follow the curve of your lashes. I start at the base and slowly move up with very gentle (but quick) horizontal motions to help keep the lashes separated. Keep in mind that this mascara dries very quickly. So if you’re going to use more than one coat, do it fast! I recommend applying a thin coat and waiting a few seconds for it to tack up. Apply your second coat (before the first coat is dry) and use your brush to gently mold the curl upward. The curled shape you create will instantly set as the mascara dries. The results are flawless – smudge, flake and smear-resistant for up to 24 hours.
Don’t be discouraged if they don’t come out great the first few times. I promise you will get the hang of it! If this doesn’t make sense and you’d prefer I do a tutorial, let me know and I would be happy to! To read about my favorite eyeliner, click here.
