It took me a while to figure out how to wear denim on denim. As a jeans lover and someone obsessed with all things denim, I was determined to figure out how to sport this Americana look. As soon as I heard that head-to-toe denim was trending for fall, I jumped right on it. I searched high and low for the perfect denim pieces to style together and this is what I came up with! I chose a light wash chambray top tucked into dark wash skinny jeans.
There are a few things you want to keep in mind when styling denim on denim – it’s not as easy as it looks! Here are some tips…
Tip #1: Don’t try to match your denim pieces.
Look for different shades of denim that also complement each other. The more contrast there is between the two washes, the better. Dark denim is usually more flattering while light denim draws more attention. Keep that in mind when you’re choosing your top and bottoms.
Tip #2 Add some chambray.
As far as I’m concerned, chambray counts as denim. It’s also easier to style. When you’re looking for a top, consider something chambray that easy to tuck in and style.
Tip #3: Add a pop of color.
Break up this monochromatic look with a pop color. I chose to keep my denim on denim look simple with a cognac colored handbag. Next time I may try adding a brighter pop of color!
Tip#4: Add an unexpected accessory.
I paired my denim on denim outfit with blue velvet flats. The crushed velvet gives the appearance of lighter and darker shades of blue – a similar contrast to my dark denim jeans and light chambray top. You could also incorporate an embellished or patterned accessory to add a fun element to the outfit.
Tip #5: Most importantly, don’t overdo it.
Keep your denim pieces to a minimum. Don’t try to add denim accessories, bags or shoes – it’ll look like you’re trying too hard to make this trend work. A simple top and bottom should do the trick.
I hope this helps answer your questions on how to wear denim on denim! I’m loving this look so it’s likely you’ll be seeing more head to toe denim from me in the future!
